English is Important

I have experienced great success and enjoyment from languages other than English especially as I have lived in Japan for over 20 years where Japanese is their only language, but whether we like it or not, English is the most useful language in the world. The reality is that wherever you go in the world, the common language is English.
Today we live in a very connected world so that even if you live in an isolated place, it is very easy for you to connect with people, movies, music, culture, or whatever you want via the Internet. You can, of course, do this in whatever language you are interested in, but English is the most useful since more people speak it.
For most of these people, English is not their own language, but a language to communicate with other people who also use it as a second language. Even people of the same birth country communicate with English because they each have different first languages. So also, English is an international means of communication. You can have lots of contact with people from other countries, and in order for that interaction to be meaningful, you need to speak English.
In order to actually learn English, you have to like learning English by using all available resources like English Connect 365+ series and know how to internalize what you are learning. You have to find something you like and then devote yourself to cultivating that relationship with the book, person, music, or whatever it is and not worry too much about your grammar or speaking correctly. These things don’t matter so much. Most people who use English as a second language make mistakes. The most important thing is to be able to communicate and connect because we live in this interconnected world today. We are sharing this world.
If you find yourself sitting next to someone who is from Turkey on a plane, most likely that common language will be English. That person may be helpful to you or will in other ways enrich your life after you have connected. Happy English learning and stay safe!

Good In Crisis

In time of crisis, you should ask yourself questions such as what is happening? What good can come out of this? What are the options? It is the time to Unleash your inner creativity, concentrate on the priority because crisis is a distraction. Counterattack and keep moving! Above all you need to be calm to be able to reach your goal.

There was a famous teacher who one day said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along in the boat to the other side of the big river. There were also other boats with them. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. The teacher was in the stern, taking a nap on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

He got up, commanded the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. The disciples were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

That is what we should do in time of crisis like this. There is good in crisis. Asking questions

We obviously communicate to connect with people.

 We communicate by a) Asking questions (WH & YES or NO questions

Also referred to as Open/Closed ended questions)

b) (i) Responding to questions( ii) Making statements.

These are done by mouth, gesture with body parts or by writing, separately or using all together.

Question may be in form of;

  1. A Request.
  2. Asking for permission.
  3. Offering to help or give something.
  4. An Invitation.
  5. Asking for information.
  6. Seeking advice.etc.

You need to know how to ask questions in conversations, not only to answer questions.So,you will need to know the purpose or the reason why you want to ask a question so also is to know why someone asked you a question in whatever situation. You need to know when you are to say “yes” or “no” or explain or give a detail answer to a question.

Communication may start with a simple Smalltalk which may be either a question or a simple statement which may connect you to your destiny. Asking the right question at the right time is also very important. English Connect 365+ series have a lot to learn from in the process of helping you building up your English acquisition as a whole. Happy learning!

Attitudes toward language learning

In Japan where I have lived and taught for many years, some of the habits that students have picked up unconsciously are that English language learning emphasizes on comprehension over expression and are taught for exams causing them to want to avoid mistakes. English Connect 365+ series are developed tapping into this culture, working with it not against it. The goal is for learners to be able to have real live conversation with native speakers. This skill requires improvisation, autonomy and creativity all which need to be practiced. The most efficient way to pilot them to the path of autonomy (this is especially for teachers) is to remove uncertainty from their learning as much as possible and guide them step by step towards flexibility. This is one of the main ideas behind these books. The students respond better to regular structure and clear explanation. The idea may sound controversial to some educators who believe in “just throw them in the pool and they will learn to swim” approach, but they do not share this reality. Many western teachers are sometimes surprised at how Japanese students prefer regularity over adventure. We have been exposed to a mix of values and habits which are second nature to us. It is inevitable that we unconsciously bring these into our classroom. English Connect 365+ series come about with this understanding. They give clear instructions, maintain regular structure, allow instant conversations, provide basic elements of conversation and are adaptable anywhere for various situations. Try them out!

Passion of Rugby

I read an article about a retired rugby player who was asked how the lesson learned from rugby has influenced his life in general. One of the points he stated that I love the most is passion. I could imagine his passion for the sport through the article as paraphrased;

“There is nothing in this world that I love more than this sport and every single person I have met who plays rugby feels the same way. There is something about this sport that makes you feel so strong, powerful, confident, and truthfully just happy. It is special to play rugby and I am so passionate about it. Playing rugby gives me motivation to wake up every day and give my 110% effort in every aspect of my life. Rugby has changed my life. Without rugby I wouldn’t be the person I am today and I would be crazy not to share that with all of you. No matter who you are, how old you are, female or male I encourage you to pick up a rugby ball and just see how much this sport could change your life.”

I want you to start developing the same passion for your English language acquisition from now on because I know it will influence you in the same way and you will see how your life will be different. Happy learning!

Enjoy the process.

Learning English is a process, enjoy the process. Look out for content, lessons, and material that are of interest to you and, when you are learning, learn to notice what’s happening in the language. Seek things out in the language, not only words but patterns. Patterns of sentence expressions as well as patterns of question structures are very important. When you do speak, the main thing is to immerse yourself in speaking, just communicating, listening to what the other person is saying. Make mistakes and I believe that the native speaker will try to connect the dots, understand your point and you may not even be corrected if you did not ask to be corrected. You have to take the initiative to discover the language using the English Connect 365+ books, because the biggest responsibility is yours. It is a process that brings out result sooner or later depending on you. Happy learning!

Dramatically increase your vocabulary!

To learn any language you must expose yourself to that language. A lot! How did you learn your first language? You heard it all the time, in many situations. You have to do the same with English language. Read and listen to as much content as you can. What do you do when people use weird phrases? For example, you ask someone when they will be ready, and they say ‘at the drop of a hat’. You need to dramatically increase your vocabulary using various vocabulary learning systems such as English connect 365+ series. You need at least 1 hour a day divided into 20 minutes or more.
